Family and Children Services
CCCF Women, Children and Families initiative provides single and
abused women and their children a safe place for new beginnings.
Emergency Family Assistance
(Orlando, Daytona, Cocoa, Lakeland)
The poverty rate for families headed by females with no husband present was nearly
three times as high as the rate for all families (25.3 percent compared to 9 percent)
and five times as high as the rate for married couple families (4.9 percent).
Nearly half of all female headed families with children under five lived below the
poverty level in 1999. The poverty rate for these families was 44.6 percent. While
this is down from 53.9 percent in 1989, the number of female-headed families with
children under five living in poverty totaled 75,752 in the 2000 Census.
CCCF Pregnancy and Adoption Program
(Orlando, Cocoa, and Lakeland)
The Cocoa office had another successful year as we worked with 27 Birth Mothers and placed four adoptive children.
The Orlando office worked with eight Birth Mothers. Two adoptive placements were made with Catholic Charities
outside of the Diocese of Orlando and successful searches (adoptees looking for their Birth Parents) were made from
the Orlando and Lakeland offices.
The Lakeland office has seen the most change with 20 women receiving pregnancy counseling and three adoptive placements were made.
Abstinence Education
CCCF’s Abstinence Education Program is making a difference in the lives of more than 2,000 youth between
the ages of 12 -18 throughout Central Florida by improving student skills to say 'no' and develop
decision making and critical thinking skills. The definition of abstinence as it pertains to this program is
"voluntarily refraining from at-risk behaviors including discrimination, racism, violence, tobacco, alcohol,
drugs and sex before marriage." Abstinence education recognizes that young people can—and will—make
intelligent decisions if properly informed.
Counseling
Counseling services offer women guidance as they explore their situation and learn that they have the
power to make necessary changes for their life and that of their children.
Career, Financial, Parenting Classes
Skills and tools will be provided for women as they make positive changes in their life.
